One of the biggest advantages of aluminium bi-fold doors over timber alternatives is how little upkeep they need. That said, “low maintenance” doesn’t mean “no maintenance” — a few simple habits, done a couple of times a year, will keep your doors operating smoothly and looking as good as the day they were installed.

Cleaning the Frames
Aluminium’s powder-coated finish is genuinely low-fuss. A wipe down with warm water and a mild, non-abrasive detergent every few months is enough to keep frames looking sharp — avoid anything with bleach or solvents, which can dull the finish over time. In coastal or heavily polluted areas, a slightly more frequent clean helps prevent any build-up on the surface.
Keeping the Tracks Clear
This is the one job that actually matters for smooth operation. Dirt, leaves and grit can build up in the bottom track over time, and if it’s left unchecked it can affect how easily the doors glide. A soft brush or vacuum attachment every couple of months, followed by a wipe with a damp cloth, keeps things running smoothly.
Checking the Rollers and Hardware
Bi-fold doors run on rollers, and like anything with moving parts, they benefit from an occasional check. Most systems don’t need regular lubrication, but if you notice any stiffness or unusual noise when opening or closing, a light silicone-based spray on the rollers (never oil-based, which attracts dirt) usually resolves it. Handles, hinges and locking mechanisms are worth an annual once-over too — a light lubricant on moving parts keeps everything operating as it should.

Checking Seals and Drainage
The weatherproofing seals around the frame do a lot of quiet work keeping draughts and water out. Give them a visual check once or twice a year for any signs of wear, and make sure drainage channels at the base of the frame stay clear of debris — blocked drainage is one of the more common (and easily avoided) causes of water pooling at the threshold.
Why Aluminium Makes This Easier
Unlike timber, aluminium doesn’t need repainting, staining or resealing, and it won’t warp, swell or rot with changes in weather or humidity. That’s a genuine long-term saving in both time and money over the life of the doors — the maintenance routine above is essentially the whole job, rather than the start of an annual repainting cycle.
